Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Reginald in Russia and Other Sketches Saki 9781318740062 Books

Anyone who aspires to become a really good writer must read Saki. The experience will either Inspire them to produce better work, or else discourage them from ever attempting to write at all. Saki was the pen-name of H. H. Munro, a British writer who's satire and wit was to Edwardian England what that of Oscar Wilde was to Victorian England and that of Ambrose Bierce was to America during the Gilded Age. Saki used words the way Rembrandt used daubs of paint, and his pen was a rapier with which he deftly skewered his subjects with a finesse equal to that with which Cyrano de Bergerac used to skewer his opponents.

Saki's milieu was the British upper classes during the Edwardian era, that zenith of British power and complacency just before the great catastrophe of the First World War. It was an irony worthy of Saki himself that, not only did Saki's world come to an end during that horrific conflict, but Saki's life did as well, when Sergeant H. H. Munro was killed on the Western Front in 1916.

Nevertheless, we will always be able to enjoy the pleasure reading Saki's ironic wit. "Reginald in Russia" includes fifteen of Saki's incomparable short stories, each one a miniature gem, representing the use of the English language at it's very best.

Reginald in Russia and Other Sketches Saki 9781318740062 Books Reviews

A Reginald collection mainly in name, and certainly not as good as the first. There's really only one Reginald story, here, and it's not all that good.

Saki takes deeper digs at women in the collection, especially in "The Sex That Doesn't Shop," in which he suggests women stand idly by while things in the house run out, among other accusations, and in "A Young Turkish Catastrophe," where he gives women the vote, but REQUIRES they vote, as if it's a great burden they should be glad to avoid.

I had considered having my book club read Reginald and RIR, but. given the lower quality of this book and its issues, I think I'll be skipping that suggestion.

This book is in the public domain. I listened to the free audio production from Librivox.
Some great stories here ... s few that are dated and thus largely pointless. Good for collectors. Contains one awesome werewolf story.
Saki is THE consummate short story writer--not a single word is ever wasted. My copy of his complete stories literally fell apart so I'm glad to have this e-book.
Saki was one of A. A. Milne's favourites, and this speaks volumes for his quality & is enough reason alone for you to pick him up. There's a rather lovely Edwardian sensibility to his work although with the benefit of history, the clouds of the Great War loom on the horizon of several of the short stories. Well worth keeping on your to repeatedly dip into. The "Folio Society" editions of his work are very well made, often available 2nd-hand via & are fine additions to any library.
Read the full title; it’s “Reginald in Russia and other sketches”. Yes, Reginald in Russia is one of a group of unrelated sketches. Not a surprise if you can read.
